Description of Personal Finance Web Site Features

Design

  • We based our design foremost on the requirement that the site should fit well within the "Resource Management" section of the Provident Living web site.
  • We tried to create it so that it would have a "look and feel" very similar to that site (so that it could easily be migrated there in the future).
  • We attempted to make the site as professional looking as possible, so far as our time and resources permitted.
  • We tried to match the requested features as closely as possible, making effective use of available technology.

Special Features

  • One of the neatest features is the "dynamic" glossary. It allows any page to have links to a central glossary and also allows the glossary to be cross-linked with the content pages. Changing or updating glossary entries can easily be done with a single file.
  • Users can take the pretests/posttests and their answers are graded automatically and the results are displayed. New tests (and answer keys) can be added easily. The grading script does not need to be updated to grade new quizzes.

Updates and Maintenance

  • We also tried to design and create it so that it could easily be maintained and updated. This included using a template that allows global changes to be made to the header and footer by simply changing the template. We also used CSS to format the text so that it could easily be reformatted.
  • Each chapter outline also comes "dynamically" from a single file, so an edit to that file changes the outline on every page for that chapter.

Content Organization

  • The main drop down menus allow the content to be organized by chapter and also by topic/level of difficulty.
  • The chapter outlines allow users to be able to quickly browse through a chapter and find stuff of interest.
  • There is also an index page that lists all of the topics of every chapter.
